South Texas Health System Edinburg Reports Record-Breaking Number of Deliveries in 2023

Each year, approximately 3.6 million babies are born in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In 2023, nearly 1,200 of those deliveries were reported at South Texas Health System Edinburg.

The Maternity Center at South Texas Health SystemLast year, The Maternity Center at STHS Edinburg reported a total of 1,189 births, breaking the previous year’s record of 1,035 births at the facility. The increased labor and delivery services provided at the facility, the only hospital in the Rio Grande Valley to be named a Best Regional Hospital by U.S. News & World Report, serves as a testament to South Texas Health System’s unwavering commitment to providing quality, compassionate care at the highest level to the communities it serves, including those with expanding families.

The number of births in 2023 represents a 202% increase in deliveries since the relaunch of women’s services at STHS Edinburg in 2014. That year, the facility reported 393 births.

Throughout the year, South Texas Health System has continually been recognized for its outstanding women’s services, having received a 2023 Gynecologic Surgery Excellence Award for the fifth consecutive year from Healthgrades, the leading resource connecting consumers with hospitals and doctors. STHS McAllen and STHS Edinburg are the only facilities in Hidalgo County to receive the recognition for five years in a row.

STHS was also named a 2023 Five-Star Recipient for C-Section Delivery, Hysterectomy and Gynecology Procedures, reflecting the system’s commitment to consistently deliver high-quality women’s healthcare. It also places the organization in the upper echelon of hospitals for OB/GYN care nationwide as it ranks among the top 5% of hospitals evaluated for gynecologic surgery for five years in a row.
