About The DAISY Foundation

The DAISY Foundation was established in 1999 by the family of J. Patrick Barnes who died of complications of the auto-immune disease Idiopathic Thrombocytopenia Purpura (ITP) at the age of 33. (DAISY is an acronym for diseases attacking the immune system.) During Pat's 8 week hospitalization, his family was awestruck by the care and compassion his nurses provided not only to Pat but to everyone in his family. So one of the goals they set in creating a Foundation in Pat's memory was to recognize extraordinary nurses everywhere who make an enormous difference in the lives of so many people by the super-human work they do everyday.

DAISY Award Recipients

Daisy Award Winner, Edna Bautista

Edna Bautista, RN
South Texas Health System Edinburg

Edna was nominated by a patient's family member. She wrote: “She put up with me being very impatient with her right when her shift began. She began rushing around to get my father everything he needed to keep him comfortable! She spent extra time with us. She calmed me down and made me feel so much better! It had been a horrible day for our family, making end-of-life decisions for my father. She consoled me, hugged me and prayed for my father and me. She cried with me and told me she loved me. She is an angel who cares deeply for all people. It really shows. Thank you for being there for my father first then me. I love you back! Thank you from the bottom of my heart.”
